We came back from our trip and resumed work.
Pouring the storm cellar | Foundation insulation and drain system | Installing the septic system leach field |
We had some excitement here last week. This cement
truck lost
its brakes coming down the lane. Fortunately the driver was
able
to make the turn into our driveway without rolling it over or colliding
with the truck that was leaving (it was close). The driveway
is
level
and long enough for him to use what little brakes he had left to bring
it to a safe stop. Two days later the same driver in the same
truck
came around a curve and found a line of cars and pickups stopped in the
traffic lane on state route 7. This time he crossed the yellow line and
colided with an oncoming pickup. The pickup driver jumped and
was
only slightly injured but his truck was demolished. My
construction
crew was in one of the stopped vehicles and saw the accident close
up.
They weren't one of the four stopped vehicles that were hit by the
cement
truck or parts of the pickup.

The hole for the septic tank | Four tons of cement tank | In place |
The hole for the septic tank had to be dug through about 7 feet of fill and 5 feet of undisturbed dirt. The truck delivering the tank had a long boom out the back to allow it to unload the tank into the hole. There was some concern that the truck would slip into the hole when the tank was moved out to the end of the boom. The solution was to lift the end of the boom with the track hoe. You can see its bucket in the second picture. You can see the tank made it into the hole and the truck didn't.
