The Earliest Visitors to Laurel Gorge

At least as early as 10,000 BCE. visitors found good hunting and shelter throughout the area. The glaciers of the ice age had never reached this far south but the climate was much colder than present.  Forests were principally conifers, pine, hemlock and spruce.  Mammoths and mastodons could still be found.  The first visitors were nomadic, moving from place to place and taking advantage of available game and the shelter of the rock overhangs which can be found along Laurel Gorge.  They were skilled in making tools including tips for arrows and spears using flint, bone, ivory, and antler.
