Trade between the Europeans and the Native Americans was common. Cloth, metal, knives, guns, and powder were often exchanged for furs. Some groups on both sides were trustworthy and friendly while others simply attacked and took what they wanted. Extensive changes in the culture came with the availability of more modern materials.
This last picture shows a scene from a Native American story about a standoff between two men that was resolved in a unique way. The story is called The Revenge of the Dead Husband. It begins when the husband returns to his camp he finds that another man is there holding his wife prisoner. The intruder threatens to throw her over the cliff if the husband comes closer. There is a standoff until the husband takes an entirely unexpected action to save his wife.
He screamed and leaped over the cliff. The other man didn't understand why the husband had done that but figured that no one could have survived the fall the fall and released his hold on the wife. However the husband had escaped death because he knew that for many years they had been throwing anything they didn't want over the cliff there and knew that the pile of garbage would break his fall. So the husband was able to quietly make his way back to their camp and was able to easily surprise and kill the intruder.
