The
temple at Edfu is recent as Egyptian temples go.
It was built only a
couple of hundred
years BCE completed during the reign of Cleopatra.
As we approached the
pylon (entry
gateway).
Two granite falcons
flank the
entrance.
Closer views of the
pylon.
Horus himself
Beyond the gate is the
court of
offerings and beyond that is the temple of Horus.
Boats you might have
seen on the Nile.
Under this boat is the
head of a
hippopotamus representing Seth (Set) the enemy of Horus.
This ritual boat in the
temple was
made to be carried.
Hieroglyphics and other
carvings in
the temple.
The empty cartoush was
puzzling but I
didn't have a chance to ask our guide about it.
Our guide told us that
very few
carvings anywhere in Egypt show affection.
This one clearly does
both in pose
and expression.
A couple of pictures of
the city of
Esna.
